What Is Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter is a fat that comes from the bean of the cocoa plant. Cocoa butter is sometimes called cacao butter. This is because the scientific name of the cocoa plant is Theobroma cacao.
The plant is native to parts of West Africa, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Over half of cocoa butter production occurs in West Africa, but it is prominent in the other areas as well.
People discovered the many wonderful benefits of cocoa butter over 3,000 years ago. It is no mystery that cocoa butter can moisturize and heal the skin as it has been doing so for years.
Still, there has been little research done on the effectiveness of cocoa butter. So, we must rely on the anecdotal evidence of our ancestors and the people around us. All-in-all, people seem to swear by cocoa butter.
At the very least, it’s going to make your skin feel softer, and it will make you smell like chocolate.
That’s right. Cocoa butter comes from the same cocoa beans that we use to make chocolate. The only difference is the part of the bean that we use.
Cocoa butter comes from the fat of the bean and isn’t good for eating. Chocolate comes from the cocoa powder of the bean.
Now that you know what cocoa butter is, are you wondering if you can use cocoa butter for face?

Comedogenic refers to whether an ingredient or product is likely to clog your pores. Something that is likely to clog your pores is comedogenic. You should avoid comedogenic substances if you have oily, acne-prone skin.
To judge whether something is comedogenic, we rate ingredients on a scale of 0-5. Ingredients rated 0-2 are non-comedogenic. Ingredients rated 4-5 are highly comedogenic.
Cocoa butter rates as a “4”, so it is highly comedogenic.
Cocoa butter is okay for those with dry or normal skin, but you shouldn’t use cocoa butter if you have oily skin. There is a high chance that the cocoa butter will clog your pores, create more oil, and cause an acne break-out.

Cocoa Butter Is Moisturizing
Of course, the main reason that people use cocoa butter is that it’s very moisturizing. It works as an emollient to lock moisture into the skin and keep your skin hydrated.
Hydrated skin by default is going to be healthier and less prone to damage.
Cocoa butter is gentle and works best on dry skin types. Many people use it to treat skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
Cocoa butter improves circulation in your skin. This fights wrinkles and keeps your skin from sagging and developing dark spots.
Cocoa Butter Contains Antioxidants
Cocoa butter contains antioxidants like vitamin E and polyphenol that fight free radicals. Free radicals are the main culprit for damage and aging occurring in the skin. Antioxidants decrease inflammation, prevent sun damage, and keep your skin looking healthy.
Cocoa Butter Is A Good Makeup Remover
Cocoa butter is oil-based which makes it great for removing waterproof makeup. Many people prefer using waterproof makeup because it lasts longer. You don’t have to worry about it wearing off throughout the day. Yet, it’s frustrating at the end of the day when you’re trying to remove the makeup and it won’t come off.
Because cocoa butter is oil-based, it can remove stubborn waterproof makeup. Just be sure to wash the cocoa butter away when you’re done with it so it doesn’t clog your pores.

Cocoa Butter On Face Before Bed
Is there an advantage to using cocoa butter on your face before bed versus applying it in the morning? I would say so.
It boils down to this: when you use cocoa butter at night, it gives your skin more time to soak up the nutrients. It gives your skin a chance to repair the damaged skin cells and renew itself.
Your skin can’t do this as well during the day. Your skin is constantly introduced to pollutants and dirt throughout the day. These will get in the way of cocoa butter trying to do its job.
